The John J. Heldrich Institute for
Leadership Development was launched in
December 2005 to train and prepare the next
generation of revitalization leaders in the
City of New Brunswick. The institute is
comprised of two programs, Leadership
Tomorrow and Leadership Now. Partners
include Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers
Squibb, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The
Fund for New Jersey and the Center for
Strategic Urban Community Leadership at
Rutgers University.
Leadership Tomorrow, Class of 2006
In June 2006, a total of 25 in the third
class of Leadership Tomorrow completed the
program. The majority was New Brunswick
residents, and the class had representation
from both the public and private sectors.
Program participants consistently rate the
program highly, giving a 4.5 on a scale
between one and five. All participants are
referred to NBT Task Forces, Board or other
community groups to continue their
leadership experience.

Leadership Now
NBT and the Center for Strategic Urban
Community Leadership at Rutgers University
planned the curriculum and launched a new
and unique leadership development program in
2006. Invited to participate in Leadership
Now were fifteen highly committed
Leadership Tomorrow graduates who engage in
a program aimed at actively addressing
community issues. Launched in December 2006,
Leadership Now participants have divided
into two groups, one addressing the issue of
supporting disadvantaged youth and the other
focusing on access to healthcare. The
program will end in November 2007.
